This two-story expansion to Christ the King School was designed to satisfy three critical necessities for this growing elementary school program: a new recreation area including a gym and auditorium, a junior high wing, and additional classrooms for the elementary school. The academic rooms are located on the upper level of the addition, linking directly to the existing learning areas, and the recreation space and related support facilities are located on the ground level, establishing a relation- ship between the school and surrounding neighborhood. This concept also minimizes the impact on the existing site, allowing for generous remaining exterior play areas and green space just outside the recreation facilities. Graphic elements, materials, and salvaged artifacts are utilized throughout the interior and exterior of the design to connect the new and existing spaces and to celebrate the rich heritage of the school.
