HAWKINS FIELD FIELDHOUSE
@ Vanderbilt University
The Hawkins Field House project at Vanderbilt University is designed to provide new locker rooms, classrooms, and coaches' offices for the baseball team, as well as expand the seating of the existing baseball stadium. The site for this new facility, a compressed wedge located between the third base line and the immediately adjacent football stadium, produced many design challenges, but ultimately led to a unique, distinctive building which not only houses the basic locker and meeting room functions, but also features a Hall of Fame space celebrating the past and present achievements of the Vanderbilt University Baseball Team. Due to the proximity of the playing field, durable exterior materials were consciously utilized for the exterior of the facility. Angled screens double as graphic opportunities and shading devices, providing protection for the generous south-facing windows.
