JEAN & ALEXANDER HEARD LIBRARY
@ Vanderbilt University
The renovation of Vanderbilt University's Central Library challenges the traditional role of today's academic library in a campus setting. The goal for the renovation of the existing space was to design a library that responds to the social and intellectual needs of both the campus and the community. The design renovates the main entry lobbies at the second and fourth levels, creating gallery spaces. Using a combination of video/interactive based exhibits and various artifacts, these gallery spaces become places for both learning and community gatherings. The Community Room on the fourth level provides space for lectures, seminars, and large social gatherings. A proposed caf' adjacent to the Community Room provides casual space for meeting and dining. In addition, smaller meeting and seminar rooms will be included for social interaction. The renovation also includes the transformation of an upper level stack area into a large student study space with the flexibility to accommodate groups of various sizes. Sustainability was a goal for this project, and it received LEED Gold Certification.
